Ever get the feeling you should be getting more out of your tank of fuel? Having a car with a fuel-efficient engine – like Ford’s award-winning EcoBoost range – is a great start, but how you drive it makes a big difference.
Poor driving habits are just like pouring money down the drain. As consumers buy fuel-efficient vehicles in record numbers to save money and benefit the environment, few know that smart driving habits are really the best way to economize.
Ford studies have investigated the influence of driving style on fuel consumption and CO2 per kilometer driven and found that by adopting an eco-driving style, drivers can slash both their fuel bill and their emissions by as much as 25 percent compared with ‘normal-average’ driving behavior. Small changes to the way you drive can have a big impact on fuel economy and improve road safety at the same time.
“People go to extraordinary lengths to save money but then they jump in their cars and waste fuel,” said Andy Taylor, director, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering, Ford Middle East and Africa. “Eco-driving not only saves you fuel and money, it also benefits the environment, reduces driving stress and can make our roads safer for everyone.”
Here are some simple tips that can help you be a greener, more fuel-efficient and relaxed driver.
- Drive smoothly
Look far ahead and anticipate road situations to smoothly adjust your speed, accelerating and braking. Aggressive driving such as rapid acceleration, speeding, and braking can lower your fuel mileage significantly. So keep a constant speed, accelerate smoothly, brake softer and earlier, and stay in one lane while it’s safe to do so. Not only do these anticipatory driving techniques save fuel, they enable more relaxed and safer driving and can prolong the life of your brakes and tyres. - Use cruise control
Using cruise control on long stretches of highway helps maintain speed and conserve fuel. Activating your cruise control keeps you from unthinkingly driving faster and with lower fuel efficiency, maintains a constant speed, and avoids using additional fuel while accelerating. Try to set your cruise control at your vehicle’s most fuel-efficient speed, as long as it’s at or below the legal limit and safe to do so.
- Lighten the load
Reducing the amount of cargo you keep in your boot or back seat can improve your fuel efficiency as less energy is needed for acceleration. Try to travel as light as possible, keep only the most important items (like an emergency kit, jumper cables, a small toolset, and a small jack) in the vehicle.
- Slow down
Speeding wastes lots of fuel. By driving 90km/h instead of 100km/h you can improve your fuel efficiency by up to 10-15 percent. Also, aim for a constant speed. Pumping the accelerator sends more fuel into the engine, emptying the tank faster.
- Reduce aerodynamic drag
Your vehicle is designed for good aerodynamics – but attaching a carrier or bike to the roof adds more wind resistance. If you spend lots of time on the highway or are planning a long trip, try to transport extra items inside the vehicle or attached to the rear. Keeping your windows and sunroof closed can lower wind resistance too. You will have less drag and better fuel economy.

ثمّة العديد من عادات القيادة السيئة التي تهدر المال وتستنزف خزان الوقود بسرعة. وصحيح أن الكثير من المستهلكين حول العالم يتجهون لشراء سيارات اقتصادية بهدف توفير أموالهم والحفاظ على البيئة، لكن قلة منهم يدركون أن عادات القيادة الذكية هي الطريق الأمثل لتحقيق المنافع الاقتصادية المنشودة.
وقد كشفت الدراسات التي أجرتها شركة فورد حول تأثير أسلوب القيادة على استهلاك الوقود وانبعاثات غاز ثاني أكسيد الكربون مع كل كيلو متر تقطعه السيارة، أن اعتماد أسلوب قيادة اقتصادي يتيح للسائقين الحدّ من استهلاك الوقود والغازات المنبعثة من سياراتهم بنسبة تصل حتى 25% مقارنة مع “المتوسط الطبيعي” لعادات القيادة التقليدية. وبالمحصلة، من شأن التغييرات البسيطة على أسلوب القيادة أن تعود بتأثير كبير على استهلاك الوقود، وأن تسهم في الوقت نفسه بتعزيز السلامة على الطرقات.
وفي هذا السياق، قال أندي تايلور، مدير هندسة الاستدامة والبيئة والسلامة في شركة فورد الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا: “يتخذ البعض خطوات جريئة وغير مألوفة لادخار المال، لكنهم سرعان ما يبدؤون بهدر الوقود بمجرد جلوسهم خلف عجلة القيادة. ومن هنا تأتي أهمية القيادة الاقتصادية التي تعود بفوائد جمة لا تقتصر على توفير المال والوقود وحسب، بل تشمل أيضاً حماية البيئة وتقليص التوتر أثناء القيادة وتعزيز السلامة على الطرقات”.
وفيما يلي بعض النصائح التي من شأنها مساعدتكم على القيادة بأسلوب يراعي البيئة ويحافظ على وقود سيارتكم من الاستهلاك المفرط ويوفر لكم قيادة مريحة على الطرقات.
- القيادة بسلاسة
أبقوا أنظاركم على الطريق واستبقوا مفاجآت الطريق ليتسنى لكم تعديل سرعتكم بسلاسة، سواء بزيادتها أو تخفيضها، فالقيادة العنيفة مثل زيادة السرعة المفاجئة وتكرار استخدام المكابح والسرعة الزائدة، تستهلك خزان الوقود قبل أن تقطع السيارة المسافة التي يفترض بها قطعها. ولذلك، حافظوا على سرعة ثابتة ومعتدلة وزيدوا سرعتكم بشكل تدريجي واستعملوا المكابح بخفّة قبل مسافة كافية وحافظوا على مساركم طالما هو آمن. ففوائد مهارات القيادة الاستقرائية لا تقتصر على توفير الوقود، بل تشمل أيضاً توفير تجربة قيادة آمنة ومريحة وتُطيل عمر مكابح السيارة وإطاراتها.
- استخدموا مثبت السرعة
يساعد استخدام نظام تثبيت السرعة عند القيادة لمسافات طويلة على الطرق السريعة في الحفاظ على ثبات السرعة وتوفير الوقود. فمن شأن تثبيت السرعة أن يجنبكم زيادتها دون قصد وبالتالي تقليص كفاءة استهلاك الوقود، لذلك ننصحكم بضبط نظام التثبيت على السرعة الأكثر كفاءة في استهلاك الوقود طالما أن ذلك يبقيكم ضمن حدود السرعة القانونية والآمنة.
- خففوا الحمل الزائد
من شأن تخفيف الحمولة في صندوق السيارة أو على المقعد الخلفي أن يحسن من كفاءة استهلاك الوقود عبر تقليص كمية الطاقة اللازمة لزيادة السرعة. فاحرصوا على التخلص من الوزن غير الضروري، واحتفظوا بالأغراض المهمة فقط مثل صندوق الإسعافات الأولية والطوارئ، وكابلات شحن البطارية، والأدوات الصغيرة والرافعة الصغيرة.
- خففوا سرعتكم
تستهلك السرعة الزائدة الكثير من الوقود. وعبر القيادة بسرعة 90 كم في الساعة بدلاً من 100 كم، بوسعكم تحسين كفاءة استهلاك الوقود بنسبة تتراوح بين 10 إلى 15 بالمئة. ولا تنسوا الحفاظ على سرعة ثابتة قدر الإمكان، لأن تغيير الضغط على دواسة الوقود باستمرار يرسل كميات أكبر من الوقود إلى المحرك وبالتالي يفرغ خزان الوقود بسرعة.
- تقليص المقاومة الأروديناميكية
يراعي تصميم السيارة أفضل شروط المقاومة الأروديناميكية للهواء، لكن تثبيت الحامل أو الدراجة الهوائية على سطحها يرفع معدلات مقاومة الهواء أثناء القيادة. فإذا كنتم تمضون وقتاً طويلاً في القيادة على الطرقات السريعة أو تخططون لرحلة طويلة، حاولوا وضع الأغراض الإضافية داخل السيارة أو تثبيتها بالصندوق الخلفي. وتذكروا أن إبقاء النوافذ وفتحة السقف مغلقة يقلل من مقاومة الهواء أيضاً، وبالتالي يقلص معدلات مقاومة الهواء ويعزز من كفاءة استهلاك الوقود.
